Burger King boasts excellent quarter thanks to Chicken Fries

Burger King filled headlines earlier this year when the burger franchise acquired coffee chain Tim Hortons Inc. The move was part of Burger King's overarching strategy to continue diversifying its menu and keeping its brand competitive in a highly crowded quick service market. Burger King is again in the news for besting rival McDonald's and market estimates in its third-quarter earnings. The news is particularly noteworthy for those with a penchant for flame-broiled cuisine and an interest in owning a food franchise business. The vast majority of the store's units are run by franchisees, and the company is always primed for growth.

The King enjoys a boost
Research firm Consensus Matrix reported that Burger King's North American same-store revenues for the third quarter of this year bested analysts' estimates by 1.1 percent, according to Fox Business. Burger King's sales grew by 3.6 percent in the United States and Canada compared to the chain's expected growth of 2.5 percent. Burger King's better than expected results are particularly impressive given that quick service burger chains are experiencing increased competition from rapidly expanding fast casual franchises brands like Smashburger and Shake Shack. This surprising growth has largely been driven by the dedication of Burger King's franchisees who oversee the operation of the virtually every store.

Chicken Fries key to growth
Burger King's foray into healthy foods with "Satisfries" was short of being a hit with customers, so the franchise decided to stick to its guns and reintroduce an old favorite, according to ABC News. The company relaunched Chicken Fries, taken off the menu in 2012, in August, and the company's top officials point to the savory snack as the secret to the company's recent success. Burger King's timely reintroduction of Chicken Fries reflects the company's willingness to extend an ear to its customers and take their suggestions into account when adjusting the menu. This characteristic is helpful for franchisees because it ensures that their stores are always carrying products that are proven to drive sales.

Expansion at home and abroad
Illinois residents in Danville and Champaign-Urbana will soon have access to a dozen new Burger Kings, thanks to the recent signing of a franchise agreement confirming the brand's commitment to new store growth. Mauri Seth, Burger King's local franchisee partner, already has nine stores under his belt, according to The News-Gazette. Burger King has kept its profits up by investing in overseas franchising as well. In fact, the company recently launched a social media campaign to build up its first launch in India. The brand is selling mutton Whoppers on eBay, hoping to generate buzz prior to the store's opening on Nov. 9, said Engadget. Burger King's smart marketing campaigns are another helpful tool that the brand's franchisees have at their disposal. These extra resources help Burger King's new franchisees focus their efforts on training their staff and building a customer base.
